The BC Lions were already locked into their playoff position heading into their Oct. 17 matchup with the Calgary Stampeders, but the result still left head coach Buck Pierce unhappy. BC failed to score in the second half, and both Pierce and quarterback Kaidon Salter pointed to execution as the core issue after the loss.

"I didn't think we executed well enough in the first half either, so we'll look at it all," Pierce said. "I think the guys know right now that they need to be better and it wasn't good enough. There's always things to evaluate and always things to learn, and there'll be some hard lessons tomorrow for sure."

## Pierce Wants Better Response to Adversity

Pierce said the mistakes made against Calgary were not typical of BC's recent play, and he wants to see a better response from his team when things go wrong.

> "I think just overall execution. I didn't feel like there was enough focus tonight. You looked at some of the mistakes that were being made, really hadn't shown up in the last number of weeks. And then just the response, after some adversity things, I didn't think we responded the way that we needed to," Pierce said.

## Salter Gets Second-Half Opportunity

Salter entered the game in the second half and described the chance as a chance to showcase his ability, though he acknowledged the offense stalled once he took over.

> "It was exciting, obviously, just being able to go out there and showcase my talent and be able to go out there and do what's best, do what I can do for the team in the second half," Salter said. "Obviously, it was slow. We didn't put up no points in the second half. So that's one thing that I know that we got to get better at. Once I get in the game, we got to keep it rolling. And once I'm in a game, it should look no different from when Rook's in the game."

Salter said Calgary's defense mixed zone coverage with spying him on certain plays. "They pretty much was just, they were playing their zone coverages, trying to cover the whole part of the field. I seen on a few plays they had me spied up. They came out and they played tough today," he said.

Asked whether entering the game was unexpected given BC's playoff positioning was already secured, Salter said he treats every week the same. "It was expected. Every week I'm expected to play as quarterback too. You never know what happens in this league. So I'm expected to play every week," he said.

## Pierce on Salter's Growth

Pierce was asked specifically about Salter's performance and said the young quarterback showed the right mindset even in a difficult outing.

> "He's still learning and growing, but his demeanor was good. He didn't get down on himself. He was motivating guys. But there's a lot of things to learn, right? So he shows promise. He's going to continue to work at it, and I know he's wishing he could have done a little bit more for his teammates," Pierce said.

## Looking Ahead to Winnipeg

Both Pierce and Salter were asked about the [Winnipeg Blue Bombers](https://profootballnewshub.com/cfl/teams/winnipeg-blue-bombers) matchup, with the comparison drawn to Calgary needing a win in the game just played. Neither saw it as something that changes their approach.

"We need to be playing better football down the stretch, and that's the message to the guys, and we all understand that. And we weren't good enough tonight. We'll make the corrections, we'll look at it, and the guys will respond. There's a lot to clean up, and we're just excited to get back to work," Pierce said.

Salter said the message in the locker room after the loss was about staying unified. "Just stay together, stick together, just keep on being one, being one brotherhood and wait for the next game and go out there and showcase our talent like we know we could have did this game. Just be one, be a brotherhood and don't take this loss overly personal because we still have opportunities to play next week," he said.

On facing another motivated opponent in Winnipeg, Salter said it doesn't alter the plan. "Obviously not. Every week teams are playing desperate, whether it's end of the season or the start of the season, you just want to go out there and play as a team and play to the best of your ability," he said.

Salter added that his personal focus going into the matchup remains on improving incrementally. "Just go out there and be the best version of myself. Going into film study tomorrow, just going to see what I can do better at and just making sure the offense clicks as a whole," he said.
