Playoff football is finally coming back to Commonwealth Stadium.
The Edmonton Elks have clinched their first home playoff game since 2015. A 27–12 road win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats secured that milestone and moved Edmonton to 12–4. With two regular-season games left, the Elks can finish no lower than second in the West Division.
For fans who have waited more than a decade, that alone is worth celebrating. However, Edmonton still has a chance to make its postseason path even better.
Edmonton Has Its Sights on First Place
The Elks host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, October 16. A win would secure first place in the West, a first-round bye and the right to host the West Final. Edmonton enters that matchup with six wins in its last seven games. The Elks have also beaten Winnipeg twice this season. Now, a third victory would carry their biggest reward yet.
The stakes are clear. A bye would give Edmonton time to rest and prepare. It would also leave the team one home playoff win away from a Grey Cup appearance. That makes Friday more than another late-season game. It is a chance to turn a strong regular season into a clear postseason advantage.
Commonwealth Becomes an Advantage Again
Edmonton’s success at home gives this milestone added weight. The Elks are 7–1 at Commonwealth Stadium this season. Average attendance has climbed to 22,412, an increase of 17.6 percent from last year. Those numbers offer another sign that winning football is drawing fans back.
For those supporters, a home playoff game brings a different kind of excitement. Every snap carries more weight. Every stop can shift the season. And this time, Edmonton fans will get to experience those moments in their own stadium.
The clinching win showed how the Elks can handle a tough night. Their defence kept Hamilton’s offence out of the end zone. Malik Carney recorded four sacks, while Zach Mathis intercepted a fake punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Those plays helped secure a result with meaning beyond the final score. Edmonton last hosted a playoff game in 2015, the same season the franchise won the Grey Cup. Its most recent postseason appearance came in 2019.
Now, a new opportunity awaits.
The home playoff drought is over. The next task is to make Commonwealth the final stop on the West Division’s road to the Grey Cup. No doubt, Cody Fajardo, Justin Rankin, and and Elks will be ready.
Thanksgiving Weekend Celebration
Edmonton also had more to celebrate this week. As defensive lineman, Malik Carney. Was named as one of the MobilThanksgiving Weekend players of the week. For his dominant performance against Hamilton.
